What is an electric motor? Well, this is a big question that needs to be clarified before we proceed with this article. To tell you all, electric motor is an electrical machine that helps in converting electrical energy into mechanical energy. Moreover, there are certain electric motors that operate through the interaction between the motor's magnetic field as well as electric current in a wire winding in order to generate force in the form of rotation of a shaft. Motors are majorly categorised into two namely, DC Motors and AC motors. Scroll down to read about them in detail!

Types of DC Motors:

There are five types of DC motors namely, DC Shunt Motor, Separately Excited Motor, DC Series Motor, PMDC Motor and DC Compound Motor. As the name itself suggests, DC Shunt Motor works on DC and the windings of this kind of motor like the armature windings and field windings are linked in parallel which is known as a shunt. DC motor is also known as shunt wound DC motor.

Next comes the turn of telling you what a separately excited motor is. Well, it is that one where the connection of stator and rotor is done using a different power supply. The third type of DC motor that is series motor is the one wherein rotor windings are connected in series. DC Series Motors are basically used in elevators and cars. Now comes PMDC motors, which stands for “Permanent Magnet DC motor”. This is such a motor which can be inbuilt with a permanent magnet to make the magnetic field necessary for the electric motor operation.

In DC Compound Motor the fields like series and shunt are present. It is such sort of an electric motor, wherein the stator and rotor can be connected to each other through a series & shunt windings compound.

Types of AC Motors:

The AC Motors are majorly divided into two parts namely, Synchronous Motor and Induction Motor. When synchronous motor is talked about, it works on the 3-phase supply. So, basically the stator in the electric motor generates the field current which rotates in a stable speed based on the AC frequency. It is also to be noted here that there is no air gap between the speed of stator current and rotor.

On the other hand, induction motor is a motor in which wherein the asynchronous speed is run. Moreover, to make it clear, an induction motor mainly uses electromagnetic induction for changing the energy from electric to mechanical.

All-in-all, industrial motors play a very crucial role in the workings of an industry. In this article we have briefly discussed about what an industrial motor is and how many types of industrial motor exists.
